Ok, I know a picture of me pretty is a pretty boring subject.
Some of the things that I get to in my job do might be of interest to some of you... Watching the local firemen play with fire...This was a learn to burn exercise i covered last night. One of the local firemen told me if you want a fire to move down you go clockwise with the hose, if you want it to move up you turn the hose counterclockwise. Does that make sense? I wasn't sure if he wasn't B.S.ing me.

Interviewing pilots of big black helicopters before they take off on a search & rescue mission. This helicopter had infra=red & everything! The subject of the search, a 71 year old woman with dementia was lost in the woods in the rain for 3 days. She was found alive with only a broken arm & mild hypothermia. She had fallen into a ravine & couldn't get out. The helicopter didn't spot her though. I guess it was too brushy & her body temp was too low. That's what the pilot said anyway. She was found by ground searchers.

Getting up at 4:30am to be at the intersection of the Highway while the VFW & other patriotic groups set up a bunch of flags and stuff so we could all cheer the local National Guard as they rolled down the highway on their way to Iraq. This was kinda fun. Drinking hot coffee in early hours & B.S.ing the grizzled old codgers.

Library Book sale. Yawn...I did end up with some good books though.

*Notice how I cleverly picked pictures where you couldn't see anyone's faces clearly? Otherwise I'd feel compelled get their permission before I posted them on the net. Just trying to be ethical & respectful.

And who say's small town's are boring?

Alway's loved watchin a good fire fight since I was a lil boy(not the one's that claim victim's though or destroy forest's)but the clockwise or counterclockwise thing, hell I dont even understand it...I would have to be at the exercise...I'm one of them hand's on type fella's I reckon, when it comes to that kind of stuff.I'm one of them fella's that want's to go under the hood of everyone's car I know.... bad habit, in some cases. But I wouldnt think they would be BS-ing on something like that.

I know this is serious and not funny...but when you atarted off on the 71 year old with dementia, hanging out at the ravine and lost, I couldnt help laughing, not that I would want to see harm...it just sounded comical in a sense... I am picturing this 71 year old dementia person in the rain, just roaming around and checking out a ravine... back in the wood's. But a great job on the part of the ground searcher's as well, and that the person is well now. Damn, I'd like to cruise in one of them chopper's during a search...over them beautiful wood's... that would be a treat!

The send-off gathering for the troop's is cool...especially for those whose asses are enroute to a sorry ass place like Iraq or wherever. The whole support thing is cool.I've alway's liked hearing the VFW's talking about some of the battle's they've engaged in, I have heard alot of stories. I guess since my dad would never talk about it when I was a kid... and mom said it was off limit's to ask him anything.... he was in the Army and a POW of the nazi's in a nazi camp.I heard he had a few rough times when he resisted and attempted to escape.

You found a few "good" book's at the sale heh? I like them book sales as well... in my case dear, I am looking for a few "bad" book's for my collection ... heh, heh, heh, if you know what I mean! :)

Thank You Ms.Rita .........

qf I was hoping you could answer the fire & water question. If you have a strong fire going in a contained space like a building, would it matter which circular direction you fed a strong jet of water into it? counterclockwise as apposed to clockwise. I would imagine it might by looking at some of your water flow charts. ???

prash Contrary to my theatre roles,(& blogger persona) in real life I don't flirt that much. I'm actually kind of shy.

Ranch chip Everybody loves a good roaring fire, as long at it is safely contained of course.

The lady w/dementia had lived in those hills for years. She lives at a fascinating place called Mountain Homestead Community. I've blogged about ithere. One of the problems of finding her is she no longer speaks, so she wouldn't yell or anything.

I hinted around about going up in the helicopter but not enough room & it was serious business after all. I've been on helicopters before. Lots of fun!

Even though I appose this current war & have protested openly, I have nothing against the soldiers that are going over there. I have been to Winter Soldier conferences where you hear eyewitness accounts from real soldiers. an exampleSo I have had that other perspective. If you ever get a chance to go to one of those conferences, I'd recommend it.

Bad Books? I'm not sure what that is? I ended up with a collection of Franz Kafka stories, a book By Daniel Boorstin, titled "The Discoverers" a cool book on paper sculpture & some books for my grandson.

I'm not sure that I understand the question well enough.

"if you want a fire to move down you go clockwise with the hose, if you want it to move up you turn the hose counterclockwise."

On a firehose nozzle, it's possible that the valve threads might be reversed (i.e. Clockwise "righty" loosey and Counter-Clockwise "lefty" tighty).

But it seems that you are asking a different question though.

"Rita: would it matter which circular direction you fed a strong jet of water into it? counterclockwise as apposed to clockwise."

If the building had a spiral staircase in it, then perhaps one direction would suck air upwards and the other would would force air/water downwards

...or a spiral floor pattern too.

Ms.Rita...the bad book's thing was a joke I reckon. Put it this way... I have a quite unique collection of book's, but I dont really want to list those right here in my collection. :)

@rita, you a shy person, I have difficulties to believe.

qf The idea is you physically move the jet of water in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion....

ranch chimp Well, I'll just let you keep that information to yourself. :)

Ask him if it's the other way round in Australia (like people say about the direction the water swirls in a flushing toilet). If he says yes, you'll know he's jiving you.

I'd say if you want a fire to go down point the hose at it. If you want it to go up, BLOW ON IT!

I wonder of the CW and CCW movement of water has to do with being right of left handed - if most people are right handed and they move the water CW, it might push the water at a slightly different angle than if they were moving the water CCW, and that slight difference of angle explains the resulting effect.

Or the guy was pulling your leg.

All I have been trying to find out on the web. Yesterday I had the opportunity to talk to the the Fire Chief but I forgot to ask him about that. Someday I'll find the answer.

If the building had a spiral staircase or spiral floor pattern in it, then perhaps one direction would suck air upwards and the other direction would would force air and water water downwards, thus controlling the flames.
