Smellivision

I've been learning some interesting things by working in the newspaper business. Did you realize different newspapers smell different? A lady called today to commend us on the smell of our newspaper & complain about the stench of one of the other local rags. I was stymied! My editor who really does wants me to learn the business threw a bunch of publications on my desk & said smell the bouquet. WoW! The quality of paper & ink do make a difference. The offending ink stained pulp not only smelled offensive, but the print was smeared. What's interesting to me is all these things are physical...tactile. how does this compute to the computer screen? smellivision

My wife has a far superior sense of smell as compared to me. I wonder if the smellivision would have an equivalent to the volume knob for the strength of the smell being emitted.

Hmmmm, yes of course, smellivision. A combination of 150 different glade plugins and boom, you've got smellivision....this could be very tactile, what if one of those pluggins smelled like pheromones? Could this aid people in trusting politicians more than they, unfortunately, already do? Argh, evolution be a harsh mistress in overiding human intelligence!

phil We are better smellers then men.

qf I would use smellivision to get my point across. Esp. when I was talking about my opponent.

I didn't need smellivision to smell those citrus blossoms...as soon as I saw them I started to smell them.

having said that, i don't conjure up newsprint odor when I read the online papers....

fifi Me too. My favorite flower smells are citrus blossoms, Lily of the Valley, & Daphne.

I've always had strong emotional reactions to certain smells. Mostly, in the nostalgic sense of the word.

Iam reading Marcel Proust who shut himself up in a sound proof room & hardly went out during the years he was writing his famous series of Novels that are nostalgic in nature. In the the first novel of the series, "Swann's Way" that i am reading now, Proust makes good use of association of smells & his childhood memories.

Do you guys use recycled paper and vegetable die?

Cause papers that use those items stink like shit!

Now if ya use a combo of recycled and new newsprint and an oil based print it will smell like a good ol'can'o gasoline. MMMMMMM...good!

We use a good quality of paper & ink, so the print comes out crisp & the newspaper doesn't have a strong smell. The problem is with one of the daily papers (ours is a weekly) that is trying to cut corners to stay in business.

Carbon black is the standard ink used for newspapers. Carbon black is comprised of carbon black, oil, miscellaneous ingredients for anti-misting and low-rub, and paraffin distillates for quick dry.(from a website about ink)

Ah, the smell of ink toner. There certainly is a distinct difference in smell between a Sharpe written on $20 IOU Stick It Notes and a legitimate $20 bill, probably a difference in value too depending on who wrote the IOU.

prash It is true! Quality of paper & ink make a difference in readability, also size & style of font.

QF Natch. The smell of money

dude, one thing I like abut my comp is that I don't have to smell some of the things out there... like gross people. Just a thought for the one I wish I could have avoided today... :(

I enjoy having music playing in my browser window, and always enjoy a nicely colored/well planned website... I think that's my equivalent to a nicer newspaper.

Sorry, not witty today... headache and nice weather combine so that I'm a little slow but i can't seem to care ;)

Yep, I understand. I'm getting a new computer this week, upgrading so I can keep up with all the innovations including Internet media. On the other hand the demand for newsprint is not gone, it just has to make periodic readjustments. :)
The interesting thing about the local paper is we are a big part of the "hub" of small town life. Everything of importance gets filtered through this office.

That's quite an insight. I would never have thunk it!
