What It Means To Be A Grownup

Last night they held the auditions at the local theater for the new season. I went and auditioned, because i had so much fun acting in the play last year. Unfortunately, if I am selected for a part I'm afraid I will have to decline. Because, being a part of the cast is as much of a commitment as a full time job.
I have other responsibilities that take priority over fun, like supporting myself.

I guess that is what it means to be a grownup.

The Grownup
Rainer Maria Rilke
All this stood upon her and was the world
and stood upon her with all its fear and grace
as trees stand, growing straight up, imageless
yet wholly image, like the Ark of God,
and solemn, as if imposed upon a race.

As she endured it all: bore up under
the swift-as-flight, the fleeting, the far-gone,
the inconceivably vast, the still-to-learn,
serenely as a woman carrying water
moves with a full jug. Till in the midst of play,
transfiguring and preparing for the future,
the first white veil descended, gliding softly

over her opened face, almost opaque there,
never to be lifted off again, and somehow
giving to all her questions just one answer:
In you, who were a child once-in you.

UGH!

On the other hand I am very enthusiastic about my latest job
& on February 14th my divorce will have been
final for a whole year.

The old life is in it's final death throes. I've finally cut it loose.

It's just me & me alone, baby

facing the future...

Sounds like a drag. Remind me to never grow up.

responsibility = power = fun ....

Hmm, doesn't usually seem to feel that way in practice. More like responsibility = duty = PITA. Earning a living is the price I pay so I can spend the rest of my time doing fun things instead of worrying about money.

If life doesn't have plenty of time for fun things, what's the point of it?

I think you should have gone larger text with those last two lines because they are very important and an accomplishment and I think you are doing great!

I thought the point of life was to invent things.

infidel You are a bachelor. The word is...bachelors never grow up. :)

qf I guess we all have our own idea of fun. If you really enjoy your work, you've got it made.

Even though I have more responsibilities now, my life is much more interesting & fulfilling.

Just another girl I did that for the effect because it really does make me feel a bit small. The truth is I've set & accomplished more goals in this one year then I think I ever have. Goals for my personal growth that is.

Cool. Tinkerbell will be glad to hear it.

I like gaining money, power, status, and popularity. I have none of that stuff yet.

Well, then, YAY for you and GREAT job! :-)

qf I have to admit I want those things, also. IMO, the money part is not as important as the power, status, popularity part. For me the popularity part is the easiest.(if you count infamy)

another girl I say, Yay for all us girls!

"serenely as a woman carrying water", was this poem written by a man posing as a women? Water jugs are cumbersome and heavy.

Anyway, I'm very serious and adult-like in my exploration of my child-like behaviour.

G3T Quite right. Although I've seen pictures somewhere of a stately woman serenely carrying her water jug, I can't imagine doing it myself.

Good luck on being selected for a part for the play. At least knowing you were selected shows you have the capacity to act.

I'm glad you are pleased with the new job, any hint as to the general nature of it?

It seems you are facing the future with tremendous craft.

Judy Blume is always pretty a safe author for young kids to read. Some of her stuff would be a bit dated now. She's got some adult sort of themes going on in some of the books, but it's nothing kids wouldn't learn on their own, and she puts a proper spin on it.

Geeze, I'm 40 freaking years old and I'm reading a Blume book. Kill me now please.
