A photography Chat ...

Yesterday I went with my BF on a photo shoot with his photography club.
We congregated at a local lake to take scenic pictures.
I've spent a couple of thousand dollars on my photo equipment, thinking it was a lot of money, but I was flabbergasted at the cameras, lens, etc...this group hauled out!
These people were lugging around cameras costing thousands, massive lens and equally impressive tripods. (I learned one guy who likes to take photos of insects has $40,000 invested in his stuff.)
After I recovered from my initial feelings of inadequacy, it became obvious to me that camera lens are phallic symbols. I had a private chuckle thinking about this, imagining all their lens turning into giant penis's.
I wanted to take pictures of the club taking pictures but I felt that might be considered invasive or something so I didn't. I'm kicking myself now because it would have perfectly illustrated what I'm talking about. I even could of photo shopped them all taking pictures with their huge dicks.
Anyway...I couldn't compete with my own small inventory, so I decided to content myself with playing around with my $16 dollar tripod & my new (gasp) $400 telephoto lens.
I just thanked my lucky stars that I had a tripod to put my camera on. Otherwise, I would of looked even more puny and impotent.

A light drizzle was coming down when we got to the lake at 9:00 am. An hour later it was a cold hard rain.
I can't tell you how hard it is to concentrate on taking pictures in the rain. The biggest issue is keeping the camera dry. Then there's your cold fingers and drops of water fogging your glasses.
On the other hand, the lake was pretty and the people were nice. I enjoyed hanging out with my BF & actually learning what some of those dials & buttons on my camera are for.
Picture of the lake taken with my wide angle lens. Focusing on the snag across the lake in the center of the picture. (As usual, click on pictures to make them bigger.)

I have a wide angle lens that I've never been happy with. It was not cheap which makes me even more discontent with it. I thought it had been dropped or damaged in some way or I just couldn't get the settings right. So, the other night I decided to look the lens up on the internet, to see what other people had to say about it.
Low and behold, it wasn't anything I was doing wrong... other people had the same issues that I did. Apparently, the lens is sort of a lemon.
Quite a bummer, if you've payed a lot of money for something...
Fortunately, I found a site that had something good to say about it and recommended using it in unconventional ways for some great shots.
Shooting from 3 ft. using the same wide angle lens. (Click on this picture to see how clear the detail is).

Another reminder to think out side the box.

My Canon A630 stopped working correctly (the flash wouldn't go) and is presently in a repair shop. I'm not much of a photo-taker.

Mornin Rita!

Geeeez ... the price figure's that you were talking about as far as even your camera equipment tripped me totally ... I have like no idea what that shit cost's ... and sure as Hell wouldnt even know how to use it. The last time I wanted to take photo's ... I went to Walgreens and bought them throw away camera's ... heh, heh, heh, heh, heh. :) Yesterday I was visiting the Art's District in Downtown Dallas ... which is absolutely awesome, I'm not just saying that cause I live in Dallas either ... I have seen a couple of the world's finest, and it is really impressive ... wish I would have had a camera there.

So that's how I reckon you and BF hooked up or had in common heh? ... the photo stuff(?) that's cool, at least ya'll have cool hobbies to share.

Nice peaceful lake pic ... and really liked the skull pic, kind of remind's me of old time's down in Mexico. And your looking great Grrrll, your hair look's great actually, it just fit's perfectly with you, really attractive.

Weather here has been pretty, sunny breezy, dry ... high's in 60's, 30's/ 40's night. I had to drive down to San Marcos saturday (business/ work, 10 hour driving round trip from Dallas) ... had the sunroof open, it was so pretty!

Later Rita!

I have always liked Canon cameras. My first one was a Canon AE-1 Program. It was the 1984 Olympics Edition. I loved that camera. Then I went digital and got a compact Canon kinda like yours. It was a super camera too. Some of those compacts take amazing pictures!

Now I have a Canon EOS 30d that I am still learning to use properly. What I like about it is all the options, different settings,& variety of lens it gives you a huge range of options. That's important when you have to take pictures for a newspaper, because you have to adapt to any lighting situation or photo opportunity. Last night I had to cover a community potluck turkey dinnerin a dimly lit auditorium so I used my wide angle lens to get a shot of the crowd of about 350 people and the food tables together. Then I used my new (awesome) telephoto lens to get a candid shot of an adorable 18 month old baby enjoying her turkey dinner.

Like any hobby, it's easy to go whole hog once you get started! As soon as I get the last lens I bought paid for, I'll probably get another one.
But, $40,000 worth of camera equipment? No freaking way!

I really am not very photogenic in real life.
I took that picture of me, so I could have control over how it came out.;)
I hate having my picture taken by other people.
I swear my mother tries hard to show me in the worst light possible, then she plasters it all over face book.

Are you using a film camera Rita? I've just got a digital camera, 6.1 megapixels takes quite clear images. I guess the main difference between digital and film is in that you can zoom in on a digital pictures until you see pixels, whereas when you blow up a film picture too large then it just gets blurry instead, unless you happen to view it from a larger focal distance.

qf I use digital only. It's the practical format for my job and the computer, of course.
I hope you will share some photos with us. ;)

Here are some Photos I took from a Model Train Convention Swap Meet using my camera. Although, you probably want to see more of my body, lol, here's one where I made a "vortex flame" out of a modified Budwieser can (that experiment didn't work as beautifully as I hoped, lol).

I checked out your videos.
It's always nice to put a face (or a body) on people that you talk to on the internet.

Would you tell me how to make the coffee filter bomb? I want to impress my grandson with a fiery trick. >:]

It is deceptively simple to make one Rita, here is that Fiery Trick. You will be advised to listen to Smokey the Bear which says kids shouldn't play with matches on that blogpost, lol, but be sure to do it up a chimney if you decide to do it though.

Works similar to a Sky Lantern, except that it burns itself up.

I concur with mac.

It's nice to see you happy too.

Giant penises. You know we love 'em. In fact I think we are more obsessed with penises than heterosexual women ever have been.

I'm not familiar with cameras, but I thought both the lake picture and skull picture had decent clarity.

I'm stuck with a sony cybershot digital. sometimes its just more about the person behind the camera.

you will see, you are going to get hooked to the camera... this is what happened when I got my Canon E507

Actually, Rita, these remarks make me think that it's you that have the problems with penises.

My son is a photographer and he loves big lenses, which he uses for his main activity, which is motorsports photography. He has a very beautiful live in girlfriend; his (non-sexual- she is a pretty famous cosplay figure) photos of her regularly get tens of thousands of hits online, and I don't think his problems are sexual.

On the other hand, I do sort of wonder about someone who sees a photography club and fantasizes about sex organs.
