This weekend I took my 3 1/2 year old grandson for an airplane ride.
He has been with his mother when she's taken me to the airport and I wanted him to experience the reality of flying in an airplane.
I know a guy who owns a seaplane so we scheduled a ride over the bay on Sunday. I watched my grandson's face as we rose up into the sky & he realized he was in the air, high above the water. I could almost see his mind working as he looked intently at everything below him. He was very quiet. I don't think he was afraid. I got the sense he was trying to grasp the concept of being in a small airplane in the sky unattached to anything.
After the airplane ride we went to a mall where I bought him a shiny helium balloon that I tied to his wrist before we left the building. I should not of used a bow knot because the wind was blowing pretty hard & as we reached the car the balloon unattached itself & went sailing off over the roof top startling a couple of seagulls who flew up, wings outstretched as they hovered in the strong wind. At that moment I was reminded of the Wright brothers and how they studied the flight of birds. I watched the balloon diminish and as it climbing higher in the sky, another thought came to my mind. It was something my mother told me when I was a small child ...when your coveted balloon escapes into the sky, it flies up & up, all the way to heaven until it reaches the little children there & some lucky little boy or girl who died and went to heaven will find it.
My mom expected me to believe, as she did, that heaven really existed and was full of dead children.

I used to tell my own children all manner of stories about magic, witches, princesses, princes, ogres and dragons. We would lay in bed & make up grand adventures where they conquered dragons & giants and lived in palaces or tropical islands, but I NEVER expected them to believe it!

I imagine telling my grandson a story like this...
Once upon a time people used to believe that when you died you went to live in the sky high above, beyond where birds and airplanes can fly. Even beyond the stars. They believed there was a magic land beyond the clouds ruled by a powerful king who was so rich that the streets were paved with gold and diamonds. And so powerful he could make dead people alive again. The people believed that when a balloon flew away into the sky, like yours just did, it would would fly up & up until it reached the magic land beyond the stars and perhaps a boy playing in a grassy heavenly meadow would look up and there your balloon would be. It would float down until it landed at his feet. And... as he picked it up he would remember when he was a boy like you & had a balloon that floated away one day into the sky.

Good Evening Rita!

Wow! .... sound's like a great labour Day weekend for sure! I am a 54 year old man, who would probably have been more excited than the grandkid! Because I never been in a small aircraft of any type in my life, not even a helicopter (only large herd commercial flight's). I had to work all bloody weekend unfortunately. But nice piece ... and a couple great piece's of art too!

Later Grrrllll ...

That sounds like the perfect gift for a small boy.
I was always fascinated by aircraft, one of my early memories is of watching the great bat-winged Vulcan bombers, three of them, coming up the Wharfe valley and being able to look down on their wings as they flew so low.
they'll have been practicing their cold-war role, deep penetration into Russia, flying below the radar.
but to me, the child, they were wonderful, magical, power and beauty.
When I did first go flying, it was in a small plane, and what I loved most of all was the superbly detailed tiny model world below. I was hooked.
My friend, the pilot, said I should take lessons, but I knew if I did, I'd sell my soul to stay in the air forever.
Three and a half years old, and travelling by seaplane.
Sublime.

I wish I was your grandson with all your attention and love... what a lovely gift !!! The kid would never forget this... trust me, he might not even talk about this all the time, but such an event will always remain in his life !!!

Even if someday someone does tell him silly stories about Heaven, his memories of the seaplane ride will still have made a much stronger impression on him. An actual experience is so much more vivid than tall tales.

Maybe your grandson would like to 'fly' his own aircraft?

Not many folks know that Google Earth has a built-in flight simulator feature. Of course, one needs to have downloaded Google Earth, which, too, is free. It takes some practice and a little experimentation to become a proficient pilot, (just like in real life) but, unlike some simulator programs you have to actually buy, it uses aircraft and satellite photos of the Earth as it's format. The entire planet is at your disposal!

A great pastime for all those big kids out there!

Helicopters are the best ride. Esp.if you can get a ride in a small one built for sight seeing that has a lot of glass. I forgot to link to the surreal art work.

I thought it would something a small boy would relate to, because of the inclination to try to connect the mechanical world (so to speak) with the psychical that boys seem to have. I love to watch them when they are intent on such an activety, whether they are actually engaged in it or just thinking about it. :)

Ha! I am not that old that I would think of you as a grandson. *wink*
All kidding aside, it is active interaction with children that creates good relationships between children and adults.
How is Manhattan treating you BTW?

An actual experience is so much more vivid than tall tales. So true!

gideon I will certainly check that one out!
When my grandson comes over we always play free games on the computer.
One of our favorites is Potty Racers II,(remember he's only 3 1/2) He sits on my lap and we work the controls together & discuss what to purchase to make our "pottyplane" fly further.
Maybe he's ready for something a little more sophisticated. :)

I'm devoting a page on my new blog to the flight simulation program. Links for downloads and other info, etc, are contained there. Plus, my own advice and tips, having used the program for a couple of years, now.

Yeah, I think Junior may be a tad young for this program, but, he'll have fun playing it with you, anyway.

When I look at that kid flying on the bee (If that's a bee?) in the first picture, I think of this song. In the beginning of the song .... it keep's saying "I'm Flying, I'm Flying" :) This is a Txas band out of Dallas and San Antonio, and one of best punk rock group's in the world I may add (yes, I seen the live at least a half dozen time's too) Enjoy Grrlll. :)

I dont know why, but that code I put up dont seem to work, although it's correct. I will put another here, and maybe it will work. The song is called "Who was in my room last night" by "Butthole Surfers".

I don't have to be your grandson to do the flying with you... we can still do it :-) LOL ... very true.

What I meant was, I wished I had such interactions with my grannie...she was all there at home, an old Indian woman, she wore a piece of long white cloth (no shirts) all the time ... she ate, she slept and she ate... when she passed away [at the age of 89] I was 13 and I cried for weeks...My parents had to take me to doctor because I hardly ate anything. They sent me away for holidays at an Uncle's house in the farm house and 10 days later I was back to normal... Oh my !!! writing it out all this, It feels like living through it again. :-)

I wish she was more interactive or was she and I don't remember ?!?!... I doubt, she was a village girl and I am a city boy. :-)

Manhattan is so cool... it is lovely to stay at a place where you hardly take the subway. We take the bus or we walk and at nights when we get back, we take a cab... lovely !!! Just waiting for the shipment to come early october then I will really fell home, right now it is camping in our own flat with two suitcases !!! :-)

Let's plan ur visit to NYC after...

i really like this post.

till now, my fondest memories with my father are of him relating tales of derring-do with of the heroes of old..

i believed them then & still am very attached to at least the concept of the bruiser-type protagonist

but my words don't do these feelings justice, its only on a deep seated emotional level that they truly reside.

ur grandson iz extremely lucky to have ya! ;)

Nice post. It was heartfelt and cute and very moving.

Me likes!

I wanted to comment on the last post, but I didn't know what to say. There's just no closure with a case like this. I'm so sorry for you and her family. I hope, if this is the man who did this crime, that he receives the harshest penalty.

Rita,

I hope you don't take offense at the terminology, but you're one cool chick, and a pretty cool grandma too.

Taking a 3 year old on a seaplane sounds like fun Rita, I rather enjoyed that post.

I went to visit my baby niece this weekend (being an uncle is neat), my brother and his wife just had a baby girl about a month ago, plus we all have birthdays in September too, so we all got together. It was quite the fun get-together, we went to a model train convention in San Diego, I might post some pictures of that.
